Serbian ruling coalition MP quits after scandal

A Serbian ruling coalition MP has given up his seat in parliament following accusations that he had been shoplifting at the airport in Frankfurt.

Social Democratic Party of Serbia (SDPS) MP Meho Omerovic was arrested by police at the airport and charged with shoplifting. He said he had to leave the duty free shop “because of stomach problems” and was arrested after returning to pay for the goods he took.

Parliament Speaker Maja Gojkovic said right after the >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << incident that Omerovic produced his diplomatic passport and was released. The case caused a heated debate between opposition and ruling coalition MPs.

Omerovic submitted his resignation in writing on Tuesday. He chaired the parliament human and minority rights committee.
