With 16 facilities in 12 places around the country, Serbia joined on Thursday the family of German global discount supermarket chain Lidl, based in Neckarsulm, Germany, that operates over 10,000 stores across Europe and the US, N1 reported.
Serbia’s President Aleksandar Vucic, who was present at the opening of the Lidl store in a Belgrade Konjarnik suburb, said that “we have a lot to learn from Lidl in the area of work organisation and logistic."

The opening of Lidl stores saw long queues of people in all cities and towns.
The Mayor of Belgrade Zoran Radojcic said that a new store would be opened by the end of this year, and another one in 2019, “so that every municipality in the capital will have a Lidl supermarket.”
The company has earlier announced it will employ 1,500 people.

In 2015, the IGD Retail website said the Balkans was a key region for both Lidl and its sister company Kaufland concerning store development.
“Parent company Schwarz Group has recently received a World Bank loan for €350 million to finance its expansion in Romania, Serbia, Poland, Bulgaria and Croatia,” the website said.
