Canadians discover 11 million tonnes of borax in Serbia

The Canadian-based “Erin Ventures” company found the borax mineral reserves in Serbia’s western region with a gross worth of over two billion dollars, the Belgrade Vecernje Novosti daily reported on Monday.

Company’s feasibility study estimated that the mine could be operational for 21 years during which some 11 tonnes of borax could be extracted.

That rare mineral, also known as sodium tetraborate, or disodium tetraborate, is an important boron compound, used >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << to make buffer solutions, in biochemistry, as a fire retardant, as an anti-fungal compound, in the manufacture of fibreglass and cosmetics and for producing detergents.

The Vancouver-based “Erin Ventures” started drilling near a coal mine in the vicinity of the Baljevac on Ibar in the region of Raska also known as Sandzak after one of the largest metals and mining corporation “Rio Tinto” gave up the concessions to the location.

The largest world’s reserves of the borax are in Turkey and the United States.
