More Than Sports
A smiling little girl sits on a new, red gymnastics mat amidst plastic boxes and makeshift tents in the refugee camp Moria on the island of Lesbos in Greece. She is too small to understand where she is. Moria was once the largest refugee camp in Europe until it burned down in a fire in 2020. Around 20,000 people from 70 countries were sheltering in the Moria camp, about 70% of them from Afghanistan. More than 40% were children younger than twelve. While numerous aid agencies provided assistance to the refugees, one organisation made the children happy in an unexpected way: with sports equipment, balls and gymnastics mats.
