EU pictures Serbia better than it is, editor

An editor said on Thursday that Serbia’s journalists recently visiting EU institutions learned that the block did not want to discourage the current government by telling the whole truth about the general situation in the country.

"The EU assessments of the situation (in Serbia) not only in media, but generally, are much worse than it is publicly said," the deputy editor-in-chief of the Belgrade Novi >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << Magazin weekly Mija Lakicevic told N1 television.

Lakicevic said the journalists were told the reason for such an attitude was that the European institutions did not want to discourage Belgrade’s authorities “in their feeble steps on the country’s road to the EU.”

He added “the regime is staggering between the East and West.”

Speaking about media, Lakicevic said the situation was “bad in more than one sense.” “It’s bad financially, politically, and media have not the same treatment. Those the authorities do not like are under different sorts of pressure. All the money goes to the pro-government media, there is no equality on the market, while the regime and the state in fact should create equal opportunities for all,” Lakicevic sais.

He added that “the government is obviously biased.”
