War of words over Serb ultra-nationalist rally

The police won’t allow any gatherings in the village of Hrtkovci on May 6, Serbian Internal Affairs Minister Nebojsa Stefanovic said on Thursday responding to claims by ultra-nationalist Vojislav Seselj that his followers would go there on that date.

Seselj, leader of the Serbian Radical Party (SRS), would be in the village with a large ethnic Croat population next Sunday regardless of the police ban. “Whatever the legal outcome, we are going to Hrtkovci. The regime will >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << do its job and we, as citizens of Serbia, will do ours. If only a formal ban remains in place, we are just going. We won’t organize, won’t form columns, people will go where they want to. I am going of course, and the others will see how they do on the road,” he told a news conference in the Serbian parliament.

Speaking later in the day, Minister Stefanovic said the police will not allow any gatherings in the village on May 6, adding that the majority of the population of Hrtkovci is opposed to any gathering.

“The most important thing for their tranquillity and their future is no one to rally there. The police will use all legal means to prevent the gathering,” the minister told reporters.

Vojislav Seselj was sentenced recently by a UN tribunal for war crimes committed in the 1990s including a gathering in Hrtkovici when he made na inflammatory speech which the judges ruled led to the forced migration of ethnic Croats.

The SRS filed a request for permission to organize the rally but was denied by the Internal Affairs Ministry. The party appealed to a court in Novi Sad which ruled that the request was not properly filed and the ban was re-issued after the SRS re-filed its request.
