Western Balkans should make trade easier

The countries of the Western Balkans region have to make an effort to make their mutual trade easier, Serbian Chamber of Commerce (PKS) official Zarko Malinovic told N1 on Thursday.

The important thing is to cut down on bureaucracy and non-customs barriers to ease trade in the region, he said. Malinovic is secretary of the PKS Trade Association.

Illustrating the importance of trade between the countries of the Western Balkans, he said Serbia’s export to Bosnia-Herzegovina >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << are higher than its combined exports to China, Russia and the United States.

“The countries of the region are small individual markets and are not interesting to foreign investors unless they join forces. The region could appear on third markets with food products,” Malinovic said.

He said the region should link certain sectors of the economy to reduce the exports of raw materials and raise the exports of final products.

Trade between the countries of the region faces obstacles while some products from the region are exported to the European Union without any problems, Malinovic warned. The brain drain and a shortage of labour in certain sectors are also problems, he said.
