Serbia’s President: Putin’s visit great honour

Aleksandar Vucic, the President of Serbia, said on Friday that the forthcoming visit by his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to Belgrade was “a great honour and affirmation of traditionally friendly Serb-Russian relations, the Beta news agency reported.

Vucic met with the Russian ambassador to Serbia Alexander Chepurin who confirmed Putin had accepted the invitation to visit Belgrade.

Earlier in the day, Serbia’s Foreign Minister >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << Ivica Dacic, who was in Moscow where he met Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, also said his counterpart told him Putin would come to Belgrade in autumn.

Beta quoted Chepurin as saying that Putin’s visit was a proof of Moscow’s wish and intent to work on deepening the two countries’ cooperation.

During Putin’s visit the two sides would sign some agreements that should contribute to the partnership of Russia and Serbia, Beta said.

It added that Vucic and Chepurin discussed the regional situation and especially the Belgrade – Pristina dialogue.

Vucic told the Russian envoy that Serbia was open for talks and real compromise, but along with keeping its dignity and the vital interests of Serbia’s people and the state.

The European Union extended on Thursday sanctions it imposed on Russia over its policy in Ukraine. Belgrade has not introduced the penalties, saying it, as only a candidate country, is still not obliged to adjust its foreign policy with the EU entirely.

Belgrade - Moscow relations have been on the rise since Vucic's Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) came to power in 2012.

Serbia counts on Russia's help in solving the Kosovo problem, as much as Pristina relies on the US.
