PM at UN: Serbia committed to peace, needs help

Serbia’s Prime Minister Ana Brnabic said in New York that her country would remain committed to finding a compromise, “regardless of how difficult and sometimes even hopeless, the dialogue with Pristina is,” adding that any progress needed support from the international community, the Beta news agency said.

Addressing the UN General Assembly 73rd session, Brnabic said that a compromise was necessary to secure peace and prosperity in the region and that Belgrade "behaves >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << as an adult.”

“Serbia will continue to show the readiness for a compromise, what is all but easy. That’s why it needs a partner, politically courageous, dedicated and reliable, what we haven't had so far,” she said. "The Belgrade – Pristina EU-facilitated dialogue needs strong international support,” she reiterated.

According to Brnabic, Serbia would insist on the implementation of the Brussels agreement and the establishment of the Community of Serb Municipalities (CSM), adding Belgrade would continue to be tolerant and patient.

She said that her country’s strategic goal was to join the EU and that Serbia wanted to be a part of the bloc because Belgrade’s primary value was peace.

“That’s not economy, not trade, not larger market. It is peace ... We want and need to be a part of the EU to have a sustainable peace followed by stability and prosperity in the Balkans, an unstable region known as a powder keg of Europe,” Brnabic said.

She insisted on the significance of the regional cooperation and stability. As she said, the region is known for “high emotions and sacrifice,” but that Serbia tried to be more reasonable, pragmatic and “proud of its victories, not of defeats.”

Brnabic said that Serbia was also proud of all it had achieved in the last four years, singling out macroeconomic stability and halved unemployment.

She added that the country would work on strengthening the rule of law, reform of the judiciary and establishing the institutions for fighting organised crime and corruption, while the priorities would be the investments in education and young population
