Majority of Serbians want compulsory military service back
The authors of a poll claim that its resuls show that 74 percent of the population of Serbia wants military conscription restored.
The poll by the Belgrade-based Research Centre for Defence and Security showed that 75 percent of women and 77 percent of men want mandatory military service re-instated, that organization’s spokeswoman Jasmina Andric said at a presentation of the results of the poll.
The Centre said 1,117 people had been polled in 11 municipalities across >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << Serbia and another 1,382 had expressed their views on the Centre’s web site. A majority (79 percent) of the polled who want conscription brought back are over the age of 60.
Defence Ministry State Secretary Aleksandar Zivkovic said the poll has double significance for the ministry. “The population have a positive view of defence of the country and they trust the military,” the retired general said, adding that the Defence Ministry is carefully reviewing the current military service concept.
None of the participants in the presentation would reply to questions from reporters about the cost of re-instating conscription.
Mandatory military service was abolished by the Serbian government on January 1, 2011.
Serbian Defence Ministry signs scholarship agreements

The Serbian Defence Ministry said it had signed agreements with several schools which would give scholarships to the children of ministry staff and military personnel...The agreements were signed with 4 schools for teachers and a school for nurses and medical technicians which will not charge tuition...
