Regional education enters digital phase

The representatives from the regional countries’ educational ministries said on Thursday that the digital literacy was a significant part of the transformation in the area.

They took part in a regional conference on digital transformation organised by the British Council in Belgrade and agreed on principles which they would present at the July Western Balkans Summit in London.

Mladen Sarcevic, Serbia’s Educational Minister, said that his department had big >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << budget plans for the next year, including the electronic school diaries and that an upcoming school year would start with digital textbooks, while 2,000 classrooms were being ready for the most advanced tuition.

“The Ministry intends to upgrade the teachers’ faculties and introduce master studies so that the pedagogues working with children up to the fourth grade can also become a subject teacher,” Sarcevic said.

His Montenegrin counterpart Damir Sehovic said it was crucially important for the region to improve the digitalisation of education, while Bosnian Minister of Education Elvir Kazazovic added Sarajevo introduced informatics from the first year of a primary school.

Clare Sears, the British Council director, said her country detected a poor digital literacy in a majority of the population only a few years ago.

“We introduced a pocket computer Microbit in all primary schools as of 2016,” Sears told the conference.

Since then, she said, some excellent results have been achieved.

British Council donated the Microbit to 60 schools in the Western Balkans as a part of pilot project.

Spears added that the  Council would donate those pocket computers to additional 90 regional primary schools and that its mission was that all schools in the Western Balkans had Microbits.
