Serbia’s opposition seems far from consolidation

The newly elected leader of the Democratic Party (DS) said on Friday he would talk to a colleague about forming an opposition block, but not about entering his Alliance for Serbia.

Zoran Lutovac told Belgrade Danas daily that the DS Main Board would have the final say on the talks with Dragan Djilas, former Mayor of Belgrade and ex DS boss, who initiated the Alliance.

He said he expected the DS to join his Alliance after Lutovac came at the helm of the party.

However, Danas’ sources close to the DS leadership said the party believed it could only be a founding not just an associate member of any opposition movement.

If no one within Serbia's democratic opposition changes their stands, it seems unlikely that they will soon unite to recover from heavy political losses to the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) led by President Aleksandar Vucic, mainly due to the parties' bosses fight over the leadership.
