No Roaming after EU accession, commissioner says

Roaming charges for mobile services will be abolished in the Western Balkans once all the countries of the region become European Union member states, European Commissioner for the Digital Economy and Society Mariya Gabriel said in Belgrade on Monday.

“Serbia and the region should become EU members and at that moment there will be no separate roaming charges. We are discussing lowering prices now,” she told a news conference with Prime Minister Ana Brnabic.

Gabriel said the reduction of roaming prices is a priority in the Digital Agenda for the Western Balkans. “We are counting on the readiness of the countries of the region to move forward. We have agreements with four countries already,” she said and expressed hope that there will be a clear schedule for price reductions for text messages and calls soon.

The commissioner said she is impressed with Serbia’s progress in digitalization, adding that the country plays an important regional role as the digitally most advanced country in the Western Balkans. Gabriel warned that cyber security is very important for both Serbia and the European Commission.

“The digital future starts now,” she said and added that by 2020, 80 percent of jobs will require digital literacy but that 44 percent of Europeans do not have those skills.

Brnabic said that digitalization is her cabinet’s top priority. The first goal is to digitalize the public administration and that will be followed by a digitalization of society and the economy, the prime minister said.
