Oskar: "Hugo" predvodi favorite
Bajkoviti „Hugo” Martina Skrosezea i francuski crno-beli nemi film „Umetnik” (The Artist) Mišela Azanavisijusa predvode listu favorita za osvajanje „Oskara” sa 11 odnosno 10 nominacija.
Osim pomenuta dva, u konkurenciji za najbolji film su „Ratni konj” (War Horse) Stivena Spilberga, sportska drama „Formula uspeha” (Moneyball) Beneta Milera, kanski pobednik „Drvo života” (The Tree >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu B92 << of Life) terensa Malika, romantična komedija „Ponoć u Parizu” (Midnight in Paris) Vudija Alena, južnjačka drama iz šezdesetih „Služavke” (The Help) Tejta Tejlora i priča o 11. septembru „Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close" Stivena Daldrija, koja predstavlja svojevrsno iznenađenje.
Dvostruka Oskarovka Meril Strip postavila je rekord kao glumica sa najviše nominacija - 17 - pet više od drugoplasiranih Ketrin Hepbern i Džeka Nikolsona. Ona je nominovana za ulogu Margaret Tačer u „Čeličnoj lejdi” (Iron Lady), pored Glen Klouz (Albert Nobbs), Vajole Dejvis (Služavke), Runi Mare (Muškarci koji mrze žene/The Girl With Dragoon Tattoo) i Mišel Vilijams (Moja nedelja sa Merilin/My Week With Marilyn).
Za najboljeg glavnog glumca nadmetaće se Demijan Bišir (Bolji život/A Better Life), Džordž Kluni (Potomci), Žan Dižarden (Umetnik), Geri Oldman (Dečko, dama, kralj, špijun/ Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy) i Bred Pit (Formula uspeha).
Kontroverzni film „U zemlji krvi i meda” (In the Land of Milki and Honey) Andželine Žoli nije ušao u najuži izbor za najbolji strani film. Tu su Bullhead iz Belgije, Footnote iz Izraela, In Darkness iz Poljske, Monsieur Lazhar iz Kanade i A Separation iz Irana.

Producenti se nadaju da će Kristalovo učešće doprineti većoj gledanosti često preduge i iscrpljujuće ceremonije za gledaoce, koji su sve manje zainetersovani za praćenje ovog događaja.
Najveću gledanost dodela Oskara je imala kada su u trci bili blokbasteri poput "Titanika" ili "Gospodara prstenova". Ove godine, međutim, nema tako kolosalnih "razbijača blagajni".
