Serbia’s Vucic: Putin understands us and is friendly

Aleksandar Vucic, the President of Serbia, said on Tuesday in Moscow that his host Russia’s head of state Vladimir Putin showed understanding and an honest and friendly attitude toward Serbia and its people, the Beta news agency reported.

Vucic added that Putin told him they would see each other in Belgrade. Serbia's President said that the exact date for a visit would be known in two-three weeks.

Ahead of the meeting, Putin said that the bilateral relations >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << and the situation in the region would top the agenda. He said he was satisfied with stable growth in trade between Russia and Serbia and praised his country’s investments in the Balkan state.

The Tuesday's encounter was the third in four years between Vucic and Putin. The last was in Moscow in May, while Putin was in Serbia in 2014, during the celebration of the liberation of Belgrade in the World War II.

On Tuesday, Vucic said that the relations with Russia “are very good,” and thanked Moscow for protecting the international law and Serbia’s interests.

He fell short of giving many details from the meeting, saying “it wouldn’t be fair to talk about it now in public.”

But he said “Russia is an important Serbia’s partner in all political issues,” and that "politics was the main subject in the meeting, notably the situation concerning Kosovo which, he said, the two talked about for 50 minutes during the two-hour-long discussion.

He added that a Kosovo solution was still far away, that the Western Balkans' setting was complicated and that Serbia was subjected to provocations, though Belgrade wished peace and stability.

Vucic said that the regional situation was also a vital point, as were further development in economic and military cooperation, and in tourism.

They talked about NATO too, Vucic added.

“We have dissent relations with all alliances, but Serbia has no aspirations to join NATO. We want to preserve our independence, and that’s why we equip our army to be able to fight off any danger,” he said.
