NATO chief: We can't forget past, but can look into future
Jens Stoltenberg, NATO Secretary-General, said on Monday he was aware of the controversy surrounding the Alliance’s 1999 bombing of the then Yugoslavia and that that war still bore a painful memory to those who lost someone close, the Beta news agency reported.
He said he was sorry about every single lost innocent life, and reiterated that the bombing aimed to protect civilians.
“We cannot forget the past, >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << but we can go forward,” Stoltenberg said in Belgrade, at the kick off of the intentional disaster relief exercise “Serbia 2018” held in the suburb of Mladenovac.
The exercise will last through October 11, with 2,000 participants from 38 countries. The organisers are NATO Euro-Atlantic Disaster Response Coordination Centre (EADRCC) and Serbia’s Interior Ministry (MUP).
After meeting Serbia’s President Aleksandar Vucic, Stoltenberg added that NATO – Serbia partnership was beneficial to both.
Vucic, who also attended the beginning of the exercise, said that Serbia remained neutral and that it would “keep that status jealously,” but that would not prevent the country to cooperate with NATO.
He asked Stoltenberg not to reduce the size of NATO-led Kosovo peacekeeping force (KFOR), adding the two agreed to be in an immediate touch if any crisis happened in Kosovo.
NATO chief said on Saturday that he fully supported the normalisation of Belgrade-Pristina relations, adding that the continuation of the dialogue was necessary for the peace and stability in the region.
