Chapter 31 on hold in Serbia’s negotiations with EU
Serbia has opened 14 of the total of 35 chapters in its pre-accession negotiations with the European Union, not including Chapter 31 foreign, security and defence policy which requires Belgrade to bring its foreign policy in line with that of the European Union.
Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic told N1 that Serbia is almost halfway through the process of opening chapters, adding that he does not know when or >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << even if chapter 31 will be opened.
The European Western Balkans portal says that chapter is on hold for political reasons. “Based on unofficial information from sources in Brussels, the screening report for chapter 31 is sitting in the drawer of a powerful EU member state foreign ministry which feels that there is no need to pressure Serbia over chapter 31 before the end of the dialogue with Pristina,” the portal said.
Belgrade media have been reporting over the past few days that Lithuania has been blocking the opening of chapter 31 because of Serbia’s support for Russia.
The portal’s journalist Nikola Burazer said that member state could be Germany or some other country which feels that the Kosovo issue is much more important at present and that pressure on Serbia over the chapter could be counter-productive.
That view is shared by Foreign Minister Dacic who thinks that the EU is not keeping anything hidden away but is waiting for an agreement between Belgrade and Pristina. He believes that the introduction of sanctions against Russia in line with EU foreign policy would be political suicide.
