German envoy: EU won’t import unsolved bilateral problems

Axel Dittmann, the German ambassador to Serbia, said the EU did not want to import any unsolved bilateral problem, adding the block was united in its stand that Belgrade – Pristina dialogue should result in an overall normalisation of the relations.

    Referring to a part of the dialogue dealing with the Community of Serb municipalities (CSM), Dittmann said it was a good sign that talks on the issue started.

“Germany wants to contribute to a complete normalisation of the Belgrade – Pristina relations through the dialogue under the EU auspices. We are here as a partner,” the envoy told N1 television.

He said that a good compromise had to be reached to enable the normalisation on a sustainable basis.

Speaking about the latest European Commission’s report on Serbia’s progress, Dittmann said that apart from good results in economy, Serbia needed to make progress in the rule of law, the efficiency of its judiciary, fight against corruption and freedom of media.

The Report, he added, showed where Serbia was at the moment, while aiming at the full membership, but said that the fulfilment of all criteria and conducting a series of reforms were necessary prior to that.

Speaking about the relations between Germany and Serbia, Dittmann said they were excellent and that the country was attractive to German investors.

But, he added that in order to have them more, more had to be done regarding the conditions they need, most importantly in the area of the rule of law.
