Serbia’s PM: No shortcuts on EU path
Ana Brnabic, Serbia’s Prime Minister, said on Monday the country’s journey to the European Union should mean an essential implementation of the bloc’s values, not just their formal fulfilment.
She said she would not like Serbia to be a country raising a question whether it should be a member state.
“Serbia’s citizens deserve a scenario in which the country can truly adopt the European values and its living standard despite its burdened past and difficult transition,” >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << Brnabic said at a session of the National Convent on the EU.
She added that “our European way has to be quintessential … I firmly believe there should not be any shortcuts.”
Mentioning the 2025 as a possible date for Serbia’s full membership, Brnabic said that that “is a great chance for the country, but if we fulfil the conditions only formally, we will get closer to the EU, but not in a sense of quality.”
Serbia, she said, had "three key points on its way to the EU: economy, public administration and the rule of law, a part with the toughest challenge, where we would need the greatest support. We have to secure a faster and more efficient judicial system and equal justice for all citizens.”
Brnabic described freedom of speech as an “unquestionable norm of civilisation”, adding the government was responsible for creating an atmosphere in which different opinions could be heard.
The latest European Commission's report on Serbia's progress marked freedom of speech and the rule of law as areas where the country made little or no progress.
