French Ambassador: Serbia could still join the EU in 2025

Serbia should not be discouraged by the French President’s claim that the EU should only expand after it completes its internal reforms, said French Ambassador to Serbia, adding that France does want to see Serbia in the Union.

"It should be a choice made by the Serbian people and their Government," Ambassador Frederic Mondoloni told the Politika newspaper, adding that President Emmanuel Macron’s goal is to reform the >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << EU by 2022.

Should he manage to do that, "the idea of 2025 as the possible year of Serbia’s membership is achievable," the Ambassador said.

Mondoloni also insisted that Macron never said Serbia should be punished for its efforts to make countries that recognized Kosovo’s independence withdraw their recognition.

"We will not punish Serbia, it is our partner in this region, which can be complicated, and we consider (Serbia) a stability factor," Mondoloni said, adding that the decision on recognising another country’s sovereignty is up to every country to make for itself.

France’s priorities are cooperation with Serbia in the fight against terrorism, radical Islamism, responsible behaviour in regard to the migrant crisis and the fight against the illegal arms trade, the Ambassador said.
