Featherstone: Not a good time for EU to expand
This is not an opportune moment for the EU to contemplate expansion, Head of the European Institute at the London School of Economics and Political Science told N1.
Serbia has legitimate aspirations to join the EU, and what the country is asked to do is similar to what was asked from the other candidates – certainty, a domestic consensus and >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << clarity regarding where Serbia considers it belongs.
Progress will depend of the unity among the regional countries as well, Featherstone emphasized.
He said the EU will continue “seducing,” but without clear messages – Serbia will either enter the Union or it will not.
“I don’t think that this is a good moment to think about true commitment to expand – if we look at the situation in Germany with a coalition fighting to lead the country, statements by French President Emmanuel Macron, the rise of populism in countries (within the Union)… Where will the kind of leadership to support expansion come from?,” Featherstone asked.
Serbia can establish credibility, but it all depends on what kind of commitment the western leaders are prepared to make, he said.
“I am skeptical when it comes to this western disunity,” the Professor concluded.
