Albania supports unification of Albanians in EU, PM says
Albania supports the unification of all Albanians under the European Union, Prime Minister Edi Rama said in Pec on Monday at a joint session of the governments of Pristina and Tirana but caused an angry reaction from his Kosovo counterpart when described his vision of a possible division of Kosovo.
“We will continue working for the unification of Albanians which we want to be done under the European Union. Albania is determined to build a strategic partnership with Serbia as well but Serbia can have one set of criteria for Albania and another for Kosovo,” he said.
According to Rama, that is unacceptable bearing in mind the fact that Serbia has barriers for all types of goods from Kosovo and continues to export goods marked Kosovo-Metohija.
“Let them keep the Metohija for themselves, this is the Republic of Kosovo, and that cannot be changed,” the Albanian prime minister said.
Kosovo and Metohija is the official name used by the authorities of Serbia for Kosovo and in the country’s constitution.The Metohija region is in the southern part of Kosovo.
However, his Kosovo counterpart Ramush Haradinaj couldn't disagree more.
"Whoever thinks someone, from Albania or Kosovo, or from whereever, will take the Kosovo land, is wrong. We won't give an inch regardless of who argues that, Edi Rama, Hashim Thaci or someone else. This is the Albanian land washed in blood. The February 17 (the day when Kosovo declared independence from Belgarde in 2008) is untouchable. That is for everybody to know," Haradinaj said.
Rama said that Kosovo will have its own transit crossing in Albania’s Adriatic port of Durres and the final steps needed to unify the customs services of Kosovo and Albania will be taken in the first half of next year.
