Former CIA officer denies Montenegrin prosecution charges
A former CIA officer who is wanted by Montenegro on charges of involvement in an alleged coup attempt has denied any connection to plans to topple the government in Podgorica.
Joseph Assad told Fox News on Monday that the US administration should refuse Montenegro’s extradition request over the alleged attempt to overthrow the government and prevent the country from joining NATO.
Assad said that he had been in Montenegro as a private security advisor to British-Israeli >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << political consultant Aron Shaviv who produced satirical commercials in the run-up to parliamentary elections in October 2016 for the Montenegrin opposition Democratic Front (DF) which opposed NATO membership. DF leaders and several others are standing trial for alleged involvement in an attempt to overthrow the authorities.
The Montenegrin prosecution, which issued a warrant for Assad’s arrest last week, has claimed that the real purpose in hiring him was to help extract the alleged coup plotters after the elections.
The Egyptian-born Assad said that Montenegro is demanding his extradition because he worked for the CIA for 10 years as a counter-terrorism specialist. “These words are sexy and get a lot of media attention,” he told Fox News.
“If you look at the values of NATO and at the actions of a state like Montenegro, they are contradictory to the values that NATO and I hold very dear. So I think NATO and the US administration have an obligation to uphold those democratic values and not allow the extradition of myself or anyone else that they view as political opponents,” he said.
