Serbian officials let off easy by Anti-Corruption Agency
Another Serbian ruling party official has been given lenient punishment by the Anti-Corruption Agency, the Serbian Center for Investigative Journalism (CINS) said on Monday.
CINS said that Vojvodina provincial government chief and Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) official Igor Mirovic had only been given a warning even though the Anti-Corruption Agency determined that there was a conflict of interest when he personally appointed his brother Predrag to the Oversight Board of >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << the Vode Vojvodine public services company in August 2016.
Mirovic was only given a warning because the Agency was late with the proceedings which were launched after his brother was no longer on that body, CINS said citing an Agency document which said that Mirovic put private over public interests, used his position in favor of a family member and created a situation in which he could show bias.
The Agency could have recommended Mirovic’s dismissal but decided not to since Predrag Mirovic was dismissed from the Oversight Board before it started its investigation, CINS said adding that the investigation was started after media reports about the appointment.
CINS recalled that the Anti-Corruption Agency also took a lenient view of instances of conflict of interest in the cases of then Mayor of Krusevac Bratislav Gasic who now heads the Security Information Agency (BIA – Serbia’s top civilian intelligence agency) and then Justice Minister Nikola Selakovic who now holds the post of the Serbian President’s General Secretary.
Gasic was ordered to publish an Agency ruling after he was found to have been using budget funds to pay companies owned by his relatives. The Agency recommended Selakovic’s dismissal but set a precedent by not taking a final decision on that case which dates back to 2014, CINS said.
