EP’s McAllister: We should encourage Serbia where needed
David McAllister, the European Parliament (EP) Rapporteur for Serbia, said on Friday that Belgrade should be energised where there was a need for it, and praised the country for economic achievements, the FoNet news agency reported.
The agency carried a statement from Serbia’s Government following McAllister’s meeting with Prime Minister Ana Brnabic, saying she told the guest that the macroeconomic stability, the reforms of public administration and the rule of law were “the >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << pillars of Serbia’s long-term progress and not only conditions for the European Union membership.”
McAllister, who also chairs the EP’s Foreign Affairs Committee, said that with 14 opened EU negotiating chapters (out of 35) Serbia was on track, adding he would insist for more to open soon.
Brnabic said that Belgrade was committed to judicial reforms and that the latest draft which, she said, had included all objections the Venice Commission had before, would soon be sent to the parliament.
Some legal experts in Serbia disagree, saying the changes did not wholly exclude political influence over the judicial system.
“It is important that we encourage Serbia on its EU road and support Belgrade in all areas where there is room for progress,” McAllister said.
