Court orders SNS to pay for insulting political opponent

A first-instance ruling handed down by a Belgrade court ordered on Sunday the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) to pay RSD 300,000 to opposition leader Dragan Djilas for causing him emotional distress and damaging his reputation and honour.

The lawsuit states that the SNS has on January 15 this year published a statement on its website which called Djilas a ‘thief’ and ‘tycoon,’ and >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << accused him of ‘stealing’ and being a ‘fraudster’.

The prosecutor said that the statement has, “without any moral principles and ethical principles stated a number of false, extremely offensive and unconfirmed information and insults, with an unexplainable animosity toward the plaintiff.”

The statement Djilas complained about said that he is one of the leaders of a “thievish-tycoon coalition” and that “nobody in Serbia is crazy or stupid to let fraudsters and thieves rob them while they are getting rich.”

The SNS’s lawyer did not attend the main hearing in the case.
