Unexploded ordnance across all of Serbia
Unexploded ordnance left over from the 1999 NATO air campaign can be found in 150 locations in Serbia, the Beta news agency reported on Wednesday adding that unexploded munitions left over from both world wars can be found across the country.
The Serbian government’s Mine Action Centre told the agency that the unexploded bombs and other ordnance covered an area of almost 2.5 million square metres most of it in southern and western Serbia. “We suspect that various types >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << of munitions and other ordnance are spread out over an area of 18.5 million square metres around several military storage facilities which were hit by fires,” the Centre said.
Unexploded ordnance is also located at 11 sites at the bottom of the Sava and Danube rivers, including German warships sunk in the Djerdap Gorge outside the town of Prahovo in 1944 carrying mines and other munitions. Land mines left over from the conflicts in southern Serbia 2000-02 cover an area of 2.2 million square metres in the Bujanovac municipality.
The Serbian government has earmarked 230,000 Euros this year for ordnance clearing operations in Bujanovac and funds from the US, Korea and international organizations will be used to clear mines from an area of 500,000 square metres.
