Serbia forms commission on NATO bombing harm

The Parliament of Serbia voted on Friday to form a commission which is tasked with an investigation into health and environmental consequences left after the 1999 NATO bombing campaign against the then Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.

All MPs from both ruling and opposition parties, present at the session voted in favour of the establishment of the commission.

Its main mission is to establish a connection between the bombing during which the ammunition contained >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << the depleted uranium was used, and a number of serious diseases it allegedly caused.

The Parliament speaker Maja Gojkovic said the commission “will seek a truth, and won’t be a courtroom, neither will it judge anyone, nor tell Serbia’s citizens who are to blame.”

The main question the opposition had was how would the commission work in Kosovo where it would not have any authority and where the majority of bombs armed with the depleted uranium had been dropped?

The head of the commission Darko Laketic, who earlier spoke about a substantial increase in cancer cases due to the bombing, said the commission would consult experts and use the result of an Italian Parliament investigation into the health of their soldiers who served in Kosovo.

NATO earlier told N1 that neither the World Health Organisation nor xxx could find that the depleted uranium form the ammunition did any health or environmental harm in the areas where it was used. NATO bombed the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, comprising Serbia, Kosovo, that was its province at the time, and Montenegro, for two and a half months in 1999 to halt Belgrade's military and police actions against the ethnic Albanians in Kosovo.
