Novi Sad bridge destroyed in NATO bombing reopens
A bridge on the Dunav river in Novi Sad was opened on Saturday for the road traffic, after being operational for the railway traffic for two past years. Serbia's President Aleksandar Vucic and European Commissioner Johannes Hahn among others attended the opening ceremony.
“There is nothing we need more today than bridges. The bridges over all our diversities Serbia is full of and those towards our future, our aspirations and goals, towards the peace, modern and prosperous country >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << of diligent citizens,” the president said.
The bridge that Novi Sad citizens call the Zezelj's bridge was destroyed in the NATO bombing in 1999. With having this bridge reconstructed, the city lying on the Dunav river has now again linked all its parts with three bridges. All three were destroyed in the NATO bombing in the late 1990s.
The Zezelj's bridge is a symbol of “accelerated, connected Serbia over an abyss,” Vucic said, adding that he was proud of the fact that Serbia, Vojvodina region and Europe reconstructed the bridge together.
Vucic thanked the European Union for the funds invested in the recovery and development of the country, pointing out that the reconstruction has bridged “a deep historic difference and injustice that separated us.”
The Varadin bridge was reopened in September 2000, and the Bridge of Freedom in October 2005.
President Vucic said that the Zezelj's bridge was a symbol of the road of a modern and prosperous Serbia but also correction of the historic injustice made by the NATO bombing.
