Analyst: Serbia cooperates more with NATO than with Russia
A military analyst told N1 television that Serbia participates in more army exercises and activities with NATO and its members bilaterally than with Russia and the "eastern side."
Commenting on a survey showing that some 11-12 percent of those polled were entirely against any cooperation with NATO, he said that nevertheless, the majority supported the military neutrality instead, following Belgrade’s official policy.
However, almost 20 years after the >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << NATO’s 1999 bombing, the Alliance has much fewer supporters than soon after the intervention to stop Belgrade’s oppression of Kosovo’s Albanians.
Radulovic said that in 2002 and 2003, between 30 and 35 of those had favorable stand towards the Alliance. He added that the reason for the then support could be "the spirit of democracy and changes,” following the ouster of Slobodan Milosevic, Serbia’s strongman at the time.
However, Radulovic said that Serbia’s Army still had a higher number of military exercises and other activities with NATO than with Russia.
“The level of cooperation with NATO is currently unchanged, but it is still high. However, the country works on intensifying and strengthening different kinds of cooperation with Russia,” Radulovic said, adding that Serbia should collaborate with all armies in the world.
He added that the Alliance respected Belgrade’s military neutrality and that right now there was no indication that the country’s NATO membership would be a condition for its European Union association.
So far, all east-European countries that joined the EU had become NATO members first, though it had never been an official precondition.
