Officials in Serbia have no respect for EU code

Serbia’s government officials, as well as the MPs, do not respect a code adopted during the accession talks with the European Union, disregarding a presumption of innocence.

The latest example was when both  President Aleksandar Vucic and Interior Minister Nebojsa Stefanovic, from the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), labelled an opposition leader as an international gang leader, N1 said in an analysis.

“It is a serious gang of thieves at an international level, >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << led by Vuk Jeremic (the leader of the opposition Popular party),” Vucic, who graduated from the Belgrade Law Faculty with excellence, told reporters last week.

“This is not new, we’ve known about this for a long time. Look at the fact that certain embassies are giving him (Jeremic) money, and you have to wonder what this is,” Vucic added.

Jeremic, former Serbia's Foreign Minister and UN General Assembly President said his party would file suit against Vucic over the accusations shortly.

Vucic’s protege Stefanovic simply reworded the boss’ statement.

“The only thing that is clear to everyone is that millions of Euros earned by the international criminal actives landed in Vuk Jeremic’s private accounts.”

Stefanovic said that as a member of the SNS’ Presidency, but as the Interior Minister he offered no evidence to support the allegation.

Commenting on the statement, Jelisaveta Vasilic for the Council for Fighting Corruption, told N1 that from whatever position Stefanovic was speaking, he violated the presumption of innocence.“

The rule of law does not rule in our country. If it was, no one could call anyone a criminal,” before a final court verdict, she said.

She added that if “just one politician, one ruling official, were convicted (for such crime), that would not happen again.”

Cedomir Cupic, a professor at the Faculty of Political Sciences, said that would also not be possible if a law forbade politicians from speaking as parties' officials while holding a ministerial or other high state’s post.

“If someone acts as a party’s official, and especially if the act is against someone else, they can do that inside their parties, but not from the state’s position. That is irresponsible behaviour, telling us that those people do not know which posts they hold and what they can or can not do from there,” Cupic said.

There is no a big difference in that kind of attitude when it comes to the members of the parliament.

“You are an evil fate of this country! You are the worst thing that has happened in Serbia’s history! The ‘yellow company’, Dragan Djilas (an opposition leader), (Dragan) Sutanovac (former head of the Democratic Party, which is labelled 'the yellows') and the rest of the gang which had ridden on the back of this country for 12 years,” an SNS deputy said during a parliament session.

The Speaker, also from his party, warned him, which resulted in 10 percent deduction from his salary.
