A press release from the European Commission said that the meeting participants called Serbia to complete the privatisation of state-owned banks, promote the use of the local currency, devote more attention to unregistered labour, increase investments in the energy infrastructure and efficiency, adopt a new industrial strategy and bring all support to companies in line with state aid regulations. The Serbian government is also called to adopt a credible and binding fiscal rules system, increase its capital spending and develop a single mechanism for prioritising and monitoring all investments and fully implement the strategy on non-performing loans.

Fabrizi said the EU would continue supporting Serbia’s efforts to improve the rule of law, reform its economy and reinforce competitiveness.

Commenting the recommendations, Prime Minister Ana Brnabić said her government has achieved fiscal stability and made significant progress in improving conditions for doing business. “Serbia’s fiscal results have been better than planned for three years in a row, which shows how determined we are in our goal to achieve a balanced budget and a predictable fiscal policy in the medium-to-long term,” she said adding that the government earmarked a record 128.2 billion Dinars for capital investments in 2018.
