EULEX gets new mandate

The European Union rule of law mission in Kosovo said on Friday that it had been given a new mandate to June 2020 without executive powers that it will continue to oversee and advise relevant Kosovo institutions.

A press release said EULEX was given a new mandate following a decision by the Council of the EU and an exchange of letters between Kosovo President >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << Hashim Thaci and EU High Representative Federica Mogherini.

EULEX will continue to support relevant rule of law institutions in Kosovo on their path towards increased effectiveness, sustainability, multi-ethnicity and accountability, free from political interference and in full compliance with EU best practices,” it said..

EULEX will continue monitoring cases and trials, mentoring and advising the Kosovo Correctional Service and will provide operational support to the implementation of EU-facilitated Dialogue agreements. It will also continue to be a second security responder.

“EULEX Kosovo will continue to support the relocated judicial proceedings in The Hague in line with relevant Kosovo legislation,” the press release said.

The EULEX mission was launched in 2008 as the largest civilian mission under the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) of the European Union. It’s overall mission is to assist the Kosovo authorities in establishing sustainable and independent rule of law institutions.
