Trump, or Marx Without Knowing It ?
There is in the figure of Donald Trump a paradox that is as amusing as it is unsettling that of a man who seems in every respect opposed to Karl Marx and who yet at times borrows his diagnosis with troubling accuracy while stubbornly refusing to draw the same conclusions from it. One might expect to see Trump in conversation with the thinkers of the Enlightenment with Montesquieu at the forefront praising reason progress and gentle commerce that foundational 18 century conviction according to which exchange pacifies nations refines manners and disciplines passions. But Trump is not a docile heir of the Enlightenment. He rejects its moral optimism. He distrusts its faith in economic reason. He looks upon the globalized market not as a vector of harmony but as a battlefield.
