Serbian population worse off, poll shows
Almost half the population of Serbia thinks their standard of living is lower than it was five years ago, the FoNet news agency reported on Thursday citing a poll conducted by the New Serbian Political Thought quarterly magazine.
“A total of 43.6 percent of the population feel that they are worse off now than they were five years ago, 36.1 percent feel that the situation is the same and 19.5 percent say they are better off,” the results of the telephone poll of 1,000 people >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << showed.
According to the results of the poll, 60.4 percent said they can’t afford a vacation, 22.98 percent said they can and 16 percent said they would have to give up something else to travel.
The results of the poll were published by Belgrade weekly magazine Vreme in its latest issue.
Asked about crime and violence, 69.2 percent said they noticed a rise in crime and violence while 22.3 percent said they did not.
Serbia’s membership in the European Union has the support of 46.5 percent of the population while 38.7 percent oppose that possibility. The country’s possible accession to NATO is opposed by 80 percent of the polled with just 7.1 percent in favour while 60.8 percent favour an alliance with Russia and 23.1 percent oppose a possible alliance.
Asked about forming some kind of political and economic alliance, 37.3 percent said the country should remain neutral, 27.6 percent want an alliance with Russia, 15.3 percent with the EU, 5.4 percent with China and 2.8 percent with the countries of the Balkans.
