Kosovo raises import tariffs on goods from Serbia to 100 pct

Kosovo’s Government has increased the import taxes for goods from Serbia and Bosnia from 10 to 100 percent, the Pristina media report on Wednesday and a deputy Prime Minister confirms it on his Twitter account.

Enver Hoxhaj, explained the decision on his Twitter account, announcing new unspecified measures.

Serbia is continuing its aggressive >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << campaign against Kosovo in the int’l stage. It is also undermining the normalisation process. To defend our vital interest, Government of Kosovo has decided today to increase the customs tariff to 100%. Further measures to be announced soon!

The decision came a day after Kosovo failed to join Interpol and blamed Serbia for “a wild campaign” against its membership.

"It’s been 20 years since the war and 10 since the independence, and its’ clear Serbia doesn’t understand another language unless it doesn't have a choice but to deal with us. I think both the EU and the US know Serbia shows no understanding for the normalisation, but quite the opposite. We have no much of choice… and this was the decision we had to make,” Haradinaj said.

Pristina introduced the 10 percent tariffs for goods from Serbia and Bosnia on November 6 in what appeared to violate the Central European Free Trade Agreement (CEFTA).

The European Union and CEFTA member states immediately called on Pristina to explain the move and annul it.

Kosovo’s Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj responded with an announcement of even higher taxes. He supported the new decision on Wednesday, saying CEFTA was not functioning.

Serbia's President Aleksandar Vucic said earlier on Wednesday that Belgrade was ready to continue the dialogue on normalisation of relations with Pristina as soon as Kosovo’s Government annulled the decision on tariffs.

Earlier, Belgrade said it could not introduce countermeasures since its import from Kosovo was insignificant.
