Since 1958, beginning of Fifth French Republic, relations between France and the United States have read like a long series of missed appointments, shared impulses, and deep disagreements, where the alliance, although undisputed, has never been synonymous with perfect harmony. The invitation recently launched by Donald Trump to Emmanuel Macron, to join a peace council supposed to govern the exit from the war in Gaza, illustrates once again this dynamic: a gesture of displayed alliance, followed by a cautious, almost cold response, as if France mistrusted a new device likely to shift the lines of multilateralism to which it is attached.
