Belgrade’s stand toward Skopje unreasonable, expert says

The director for the Centre for Regionalism from Serbia’s northern city of Novi Sad said on Wednesday that Serbia behaved “contrary to common sense” regarding the forthcoming referendum on new country’s name of Macedonia, the Beta news agency reported.

He added that official Belgrade had shown “real ill will” toward the neighbouring country since Prime Minister Zoran Zaev’s Social-democrats replaced the die-hard nationalist VMRO-DPMNE in power.

Serbia's >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << ruling Progressive Party (SNS) of the President Aleksandar Vucic has had friendly relations with the VMRO-DPMNE.

“It’s obvious that the current regime in Macedonia is not close to the SNS. Serbia, for instance, unlike many countries, has not congratulated Macedonia and Greece on the new name deal agreed by Zaev and his Greek counterpart Alexis Tsipras (in June),” Popov said.

He added that the Skopje - Athens agreement diverted attention from the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue on normalisation of relations and probably upset the Belgrade authorities.

“If Macedonians vote for the deal in the referendum, enabling Skopje to go toward NATO and the European Union, Zaev could replace Vucic as a leader the international community sees a champion of peace in the region,” Popov said.
