Serbia enhances border control over monkeypox virus
Serbia’s Health Ministry ordered stricter country's border control over monkeypox virus that appeared in Western Europe, the Beta news agency reported on Wednesday.
Zoran Panajotovic, Deputy Health Minister, told Prva TV that the 24-hour control was introduced as a precautionary measure, especially at the airports, and that passengers from Nigeria were the first to be checked.
World Health Organisation (WHO) says that monkeypox is a rare viral zoonotic disease that >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << occurs primarily in remote parts of central and west Africa, near tropical rainforests. It is similar to human smallpox, a condition that has been eradicated in 1980.
It is mostly transmitted to people from various wild animals such as rodents and primates but has limited secondary spread through human-to-human transmission.
Although monkeypox is much milder than smallpox, it can be fatal.
Typically, case fatality in monkeypox outbreaks has been between one to ten percent, with most deaths occurring in younger age groups.
There is no specific treatment or vaccine available although prior smallpox vaccination was highly effective in preventing monkeypox as well.
