Thaci in Minsk: No agreement on anything yet with Serbia

Kosovo’s President Hashim Thaci said in Minsk on Wednesday it was time for a settlement on normalisation of relations between Belgrade and Pristina which would not include borders along the ethnic lines or the exchange of population, the Beta news agency reported.

Thaci is taking part in the Munich Security Conference (MSC) Core Group meeting in the Belarus capital and told a panel about the processes Serbia and Kosovo >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << were going through searching for an agreement on peace and reconciliation.

Serbia’s Prime Minister Ana Brnabic is also in Minsk, and the two have met at the conference’s sidelines.

“The world has changed. Europe is at the crossroads on many issues concerning the future. The Western Balkans remains in an unclear position. In that reality, Kosovo and Serbia are trying to find a final peace agreement. We are considering all ideas,” Thaci told the panel.

But, he added, “as far as an accord is concerned, we haven’t agreed on anything yet.” Thaci said any agreement had to be "permanent, not provisional so that it brings more peace to our neighbours in the region.”

He said the current status quo was not sustainable any more and that frozen conflict was harmful to both Belgrade and Pristina “in all life aspects, such as integration, economic development, security...”

“Any agreement should be on normalisation and reconciliation between the two states and two peoples. It has to be legally binding. A comprehensive settlement should envisage the mutual recognition between Kosovo and Serbia. Without the recognition, this or any other agreement would not have any sense,” Thaci added.

He said that in his view an accord “won’t include divisions along the ethnic lines, there won’t be an exchange of population between our countries. We will preserve the multi-ethnic spirit and reality in both Kosovo and Serbia.”

Thaci hasn't mentioned any border correction to include the annexation of Serbia's southern region mostly populated by the ethnic Albanians, which has become his mantra in the last months during a break in the Belgrade - Pristina dialogue in Brussel.

While he was in Minsk, Pristina's parliament discussed a resolution which would ban him from negotiating any border changes.
