Six percent of Serbia's population live in absolute poverty

Out of Serbia’s seven million people six percent, live in absolute poverty, while those with just over a 100 Euros a month are above that imagined line, N1 reported on Wednesday.

If the country joins the European Union now, it will be the most impoverished state in the bloc, civil rights activists from the Center for Democracy Foundation say.

They added that the 100 Euros line was humiliating and that, according to it, only those who didn’t die of starvation were >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << not poor.

“I ask those who set the line – how a single person who doesn’t own an apartment survives on 100 Euros? They may have something to eat, but where can they live, how can they afford clothing, heating…,” Sarita Bradas from the Center said.

Its data showed that half a million of Serbia’s population live without money for basic needs, while almost 60 per cent of the parents with two or more children are at risk of poverty, and 40 percent cannot pay monthly expenses.

Belgrade adopted the Strategy for Eradication of Poverty 15 years ago, but without an effect.

“Today, the rich are richer, and poor are poorer. The Government is taking measures which, unfortunately, do not reduce the trend," Ivan Sekulovic, former head of the Team for Social Inclusion and Reduction of Poverty said.

He added that "the welfare is inadequate" and that " both financial aid to the poor and child allowances are below any poverty line.”
