Some 400,000 children in Serbia face poverty risk

The Network of Children Organisations in Serbia said that some 400,000 youngsters in the country face the risk of poverty due to, among other things, high educational cost, the Beta news agency reported on Wednesday.

On the occasion of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, the Network’s statement said that the most of the families in Serbia live on some 250 Euros a month and that the country has a high level of inequality in earnings’ distribution.

“That is why the families with school children, or with university students, face a greater risk of poverty and can barely satisfy even basic needs,” the statement said.

The Network also warns about many schoolbooks which are too heavy for children to carry and suggested to the Government to consider replacing the old-fashioned way of studying with technological innovations.
