Serbia won’t beg for anything, President tells Le Monde

Serbia has to do its part on the European integration path and does not want to beg anyone for anything, President Aleksandar Vucic said in an interview for the Friday edition of Paris daily Le Monde.

“My approach is different to Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama’s. I don’t want to beg for anything. We have to do our part of the job, we have to go forward because of ourselves,” Vucic said.

The Serbian President is in Paris for a European Council on Foreign Relations >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << conference.

According to Vucic, Serbia has had a budget surplus for the third year in a row without any outside pressure but it also needs more foreign investments.

“The European Commission has welcomed our economic progress. We know what else has to be improved: the rule of law and freedom of expression,” Vucic said.

Asked about French President Emanuel Macron’s statement that the European Union needs to be reformed before accepting new members, the Serbian President said that he was encouraged by what he heard from Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel at the recent EU-Western Balkans summit in Sofia.

“No one is as enthusiastic as we are in the Balkans but that is the reality. The French President seemed positive to me even though he was speaking about the need to strengthen the EU before considering new members. He is a true leader because he is capable of saying difficult things,” Vucic said.

The Serbian President said the most difficult part of the job still lies ahead. “The question of Kosovo, our relations with Pristina. This is about hundreds of thousands of people, an ancient conflict. If this issue is not resolved Serbia will have no future and if we have peace everything will be possible in the Balkans,” he said.
