No issues between Serbia & Ukraine, two leaders say
Serbia and Ukraine have traditionally good, friendly relations without any open issues, presidents of the two countries said in the meeting on Tuesday, the Beta news agency reported.
Petro Poroshenko, who is on an official visit to Belgrade said his country supported Serbia’s territorial integrity and did not recognise Kosovo’s independence.
“I want to emphasise that we respect Serbia’s territorial integrity and its sovereignty. We haven't recognised >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << Kosovo, and we would like that a compromise, honouring Serbia’s interests, is found,” Poroshenko said after the talks with Vucic.
He added that Ukraine also insisted on its territorial integrity which includes Crimea, saying he expected Serbia’s unconditional support for the implementation of a peace mission in Ukraine, as agreed by the Minsk accords.
He said he also hoped for Belgrade’s support to Kiev regarding Crimea.
Russia annexed the peninsula in 2014 and Belgrade has not recognised its independence regardless of its good relations with Moscow.
After the fighting broke up in eastern Ukraine where Russian rebels, helped by Moscow, took control of the bordering regions, Moscow and Kiev signed two agreements in Belarus capital known as Minsk 1 and Minsk 2, in 2014 -15.
The Minsk 1 failed, and four months later Minsk 2 was also signed under the international auspices to revive the peace efforts, this time with more details than the previous one.
However, it’s not working very well either.
The implementation of a UN peace mission is still under negotiations since sporadic battles occur in the bordering regions of Donas and Luhansk currently under the control of local Russians who are fighting Kiev forces.
On Tuesday, Poroshenko said he hoped that the full implementation of the Minsk accords would return peace to the whole of Ukraine.
Vucic said that Ukraine had always respected Serbia’s territorial integrity and that Serbia would do the same concerning Ukraine.
“We hope that all problems in Ukraine would be solved peacefully. We support the Minsk agreements and believe that OECE is an essential link in establishing peace," Vucic said.
The two presidents also discussed the improvement of overall bilateral relations.
In the meantime, the foreign ministers of Ukraine and Serbia signed an agreementabolishing visas for Ukrainians. Serbia's citizens do not need permissions for travelling into this Eastern European country.
