Ukraine President visits Serbia
Petro Poroshenko, the President of Ukraine, has come to an official visit to Belgrade and is scheduled to meet his Serbia’s counterpart Aleksandar Vucic and to take part in Serbia – Ukraine business forum, N1 Belgrade reported late on Monday.
Poroshenko was greeted at the Belgrade airport by Serbia’s Minister for European Integration Jadranka Joksimovic.
Serbia has not recognised the independence of the Ukrainian peninsula Crimea annexed by Russia in 2014, with >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << Vucic saying that it would be like “shooting yourself in the foot,” but voted against the UN Resolution on Crimea in support of the Russian stand.
Ukraine also has not recognised Kosovo as a state and maintained that it is a part of Serbia as Crimea is apart of Ukraine.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said that “if Kosovo (independence) was possible why shouldn't Crimea’s be?’
Moscow hasn’t recognised Pristina’s independence either.
The European Union has recently extended sanctions against Russia for its policy in Ukraine. Belgrade has not joined the penalties, though Serbia will have to adjust its foreign policy to the EU’s, but as just a candidate country it can still avoid it.
The Belgrade – Moscow relations have been on the rise since 2012 when Vucic’s Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) came to power.
