Aid to support rule of law, EU Commissioner Hahn says

The European Union has earmarked 41 million Euro for Serbia, primarily to support the rule of law and help make the judiciary independent and more efficient, EU Commissioner for European Neighbourhood and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn said on Monday.

Speaking at a joint news conference with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic after the signing of an agreement to implement the IPA action program, Hahn said the rule of law is the thing that decides the speed of Serbia’s >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << accession to the EU and the quality of the judiciary is important to investors.

The agreement, valued at 41,177,139 Euro was signed by European Integration Minister Jadranka Joksimovic and EU Delegation chief Sem Fabrizi.

"This 41 million Euro is not much. It is a small part of the financial aid that the EU provides for Serbia and is a reflection of our strong determination to fully support Serbia in its European integration process,” the commissioner said, adding that Serbia gets some 200 million Euro in aid from the EU every year. “We have given Serbia two billion Euro in grants in the past 10 years,” he said.

Hahn did not want to talk about Kosovo, saying that it is an open question but not the sole issue on Serbia’s path to the EU. “There are other issues and everything is being done in the interest of the citizens, for better quality of life and European perspectives, he said.

Vucic said they discussed Belgrade-Pristina relations, the situation in the region and things that Serbia has to improve in terms of rule of law. “I believe that significant progress will be made (in rule of law) before the next European Commission report,” the Serbian President said.

Serbia is implementing reforms for its citizens and to achieve progress and it believes that the EU will resolve its internal problems to allow the Western Balkans to continue quickly down the road to EU membership, he said.

Vucic said that the EU has provided 138 million Euro in aid to Serbia this year adding that the most important thing is how the money is used so that it will be visible and show the public that the EU is Serbia’s most important and biggest donor.
