Kosovo’s Thaci loses support for border correction at home
Hashim Thaci, the President of Kosovo, said he would talk about his idea of border correction with Belgrade to everyone at the meeting of the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie, to be held in Armenia, despite opposition at home, the FoNet news agency reported on Tuesday.
Thaci said that he already had talks with many people, mostly from Serbia’s southern region of Presevo Valley, with an ethnic Albanian majority, of its secession from Belgrade and unification >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << with Kosovo.
Kosovo’s President is pursuing the idea despite opposition at home where the majority of both ruling coalition and opposition parties are against it.
A Social-democratic Party deputy, Dukadjin Gorani, described Thaci’s statement that the international community supported any solution acceptable to both Belgrade and Pristina, as dangerous.
“Thaci decided to read it as a permission to initiate a serious public provocation, known as the border correction, created only to trigger confusion with people and cause political conflicts,” Gorani said.
Ardian Gjini, deputy leader of the Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj’s Alliance for the Future of Kosovo, agreed that Thaci’s idea was risky.
“It’s precarious when someone has an idea and wants everyone to accept it, even if they are against. A majority of Kosovo’s people want the country within the existing borders and even over a half of (Thaci’s) Democratic Party of Kosovo members, agree with us,” Gjini said.
Haradinaj and Thaci, whose parties are in coalition, have been at odds for some time over the border issue, with Haradinaj saying that any changes could lead to “new tragedies,” referring to the 1998-1999 war in Kosovo.
