Presevo Valley has right to secede, Kosovo President says
Hashim Thaci, Kosovo’s President, said on Wednesday that there was a realistic possibility for “a unification” with Serbia’s southern region as a part of Pristina – Belgrade dialogue on normalisation of relations, N1 reported.
He said that such a move would be a legitimate right of the ethnic Albanians from the Presevo Valley, consisting of three municipalities two of which have an Albanian majority.
Thaci wrote on his Facebook profile that he >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << had discussions with the academics, civil society, business representatives, students and journalists, mostly from the Valley, and that the main topic was the regions’ unification with Kosovo.
He reiterated the idea despite a public disarrangement with his coalition partners, led by the Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj, as well as some opposition leaders who strongly opposed border changes, fearing that Thaci would give up on northern Kosovo with the Serb majority in exchange for the Presevo Valley.
Haradinal said that any border change would lead to new tragedies, referring to the 1998-1999 war in Kosovo.
Thaci he only favoured border correction, but excluded any division of Kosovo or territory swap.
Belgrade says it is in favour of the separation with the Albanians, but President Aleksandar Vucic has not explained further. He only reiterates that a solution in which Pristina gets everything and Belgrade nothing is not acceptable.
On Tuesday, the European Parliament Foreign Affairs Committee adopted a draft resolution on the Western Balkans saying that a border agreement between Belgrade and Pristina was acceptable only if it did not endanger regional stability.
