Gendarmes being re-tried for assault on Vucic

A group of Serbian Gendarmerie troopers are being re-tried before the Higher Court in Belgrade after receiving suspended sentences for using excessive force against Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic’s brother Andrej in 2014.

The new trial was set to open on Wednesday but the hearing was postponed due to procedural reasons. The gendarmes and their commander are charged with using excessive force against Andrej Vucic and Predrag Mali (brother of then Belgrade Mayor Sinisa Mali) >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << during the 2014 Pride Parade. The Gendarmes are charged with assaulting two members of the Serbian military who were escorting Vucic and Mali.

The suspended sentences which were handed down against seven gendarmes early in December 2017, were overturned on appeal and a new trial was ordered in June 2018. An eight man was freed.

The gendarmes claimed throughout the initial trial that they did not exceed their power and did not use excess force. An N1 video of the altercation and subsequent clash shows the uniformed gendarmes using force after a verbal exchange during which Andrej Vucic was seen to throw a water bottle at one of them.
