Deal with Albanians in Serbia’s interest, President says
Serbia’s President Aleksandar Vucic told a Belgrade daily on Wednesday that it was in the interest of his country to strike a legally binding agreement with the Kosovo Albanians.
He added that in achieving that, Serbia needed a full consent and a majority will of the society.
“It is in Serbia’s interest to achieve the agreement with the Albanians, regardless whether we will become a European Union member >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << or not. But, if that happens (the deal with Pristina), I’m convinced that the door would not be just slightly, but wide open,” Vucic told Vecernje novosti daily.
He added that he would present his plan for Kosovo when he thought it was good for the country and that it could produce a specific result.
“Even if our GDP is five times higher and we become the champions of the EU reforms, at the end they will make Kosovo a final condition… That’s why we want to strike a compromising solution, Vucic added.
He reiterated that it was not realistic for Belgrade to give everything and get nothing in return and that the Albanians had to understand that, “because without the deal they won’t have future either.”
Vucic said that “some big international political players” had drafted certain solutions in the “non-paper” form, but added that Serbia could hardly accept them if asked.
“Big Western powers’ starting point is that Kosovo’s independence is a done deal,” he said, adding that those countries would not abandon the stand.
Belgrade, according to him, is trying to see what it can get for the Serbs in Kosovo and Serbia as well.
“The safety, a life, economic development, prospects, future of the Serbs in Kosovo are, of course, the most important things, but it is of a huge significance for Serbia too,” Vucic said.
